tulle sweatshirt dress | easy sewing tutorial

Every in one case in a while I peruse the kids section at J. Crew to get sewing ideas. I'g non likely to spend $40 on a sweater or $70 on a wearing apparel for my six-year-old, but I practise love the look of their clothes. I especially liked this tulle skirted sweatshirt dress I saw recently and decided to effigy out how to make something similar for my daughter. I started with a $five clearance sweatshirt from Target and added a skirt for an easy tulle sweatshirt dress that didn't toll anywhere near 70 bucks.

I put it together while my daughter was at kindergarten i day, and she was thrilled to try it on when she got home.

She loves wearing dresses, and I love outfits that are casual enough for her to exist comfortable in. And easy for me to wash!

With this dress, everyone'south happy.

Here's how I made it. I started with a sweatshirt, 1/2 a g of cheap knit fabric, and i total yard of English tulle (also called English net or English netting). English net is MUCH softer than the cheap tulle you'll find at arts and crafts or material stores. Information technology hangs nicely and doesn't go bunched up when you use multiple layers of information technology. Then far it's washing up well too. I ordered this English net on Etsy, considering my local fabric shop doesn't sell it. If you're making a dress for a taller girl than a size six, you lot'll need more 1 yard of cyberspace or tulle.

I started by having my daughter try on the sweatshirt and measuring from the hem seam down to the middle of her knee. That was eleven inches. I added 1 inch to business relationship for the hem, making the length I'chiliad using for the skirt pieces 12 inches.

I as well measured the width of the sweatshirt at the hemline. I used the 1/2 yard of knit fabric to create an underskirt. I cut two underskirt pieces: they are each 12 inches long, and as broad at the top as the sweatshirt is at the hem, + one inch for seam assart. I angled out the sides slightly so the bottom of the underskirt is a couple inches wider than the peak, to permit for easier movement.

Lay the underskirt pieces right sides together and stitch down each side using ane/ii inch seam assart, as shown in a higher place. Also, turn up the lesser of the underskirt and hem.

Next, you lot'll use the English language internet to create 3 layers of overskirt. The net I used came 60 inches broad, so I cutting 3 panels that were each 12 inches alpine by the full 60 inches wide. Sewing each console separately, fold it in half so the selvedge edges encounter and run up them together, then printing the seam allowance to one side.

When sewing on tulle or english cyberspace yous'll desire to go slowly and lower your automobile tension a flake. I even had to pull the net a smidge as I sewed it so that it didn't get bunched upwardly in my machine.

Once you've done that, you'll take one underskirt and three overskirt layers. Slide the overskirt layers inside of each other and pin them together all along the top to secure them together.

Knit underskirt and tulle skirt which is much wider

At present we need to gather the top of the overskirts until they are the same width every bit the underskirt. So stitch a gathering stitch (long stitch length and low stitch tension) all the manner around the elevation of the overskirts (through all three at in one case), well-nigh half and inch from the border. Pull on the bobbin thread to gather up the top of the overskirt until information technology is the same width every bit the underskirt, distributing the gathers evenly. Identify the underskirt, correct side out, within the overskirts, besides correct side out, and pin the together at the peak as shown:

Tulle skirt has been gathered to the same width as the knit underskirt, pinned over the skirt

Then stitch all the way around the top with a stitch that has some stretch, like a zig zag. I used a serger, which is the best option if you have one because information technology makes the edge very tidy.

Now you have a finished skirt, and you just demand to attach information technology to the sweatshirt. Slide the skirt within the sweatshirt equally shown, pinning the tiptop edge of the brim to the hemline of the sweatshirt.

Sew the skirt to the sweatshirt. You can either utilize a machine stitch right over the hemstitching, or you can hand stitch information technology inside the sweatshirt, which is what I did:

Finished! Because I hemmed the underskirt and not the overskirt, the tulle/net layer is a bit longer than the underskirt. I similar how that looks, but you lot could certainly trim it up if y'all'd prefer.
